Search Engine Submissions and effective SEO

One of the most commonly used and abused SEO tactics is that of Search Engine Submission. This is the practice of manually informing the search engines about your site's existence, without waiting for them to come round on their regular crawls of the web. Far too frequently, however, the process of submitting to the search engines directly is marketed as the most important element of SEO, with companies promising to submit your site to tens of thousands of search engines each month for a flat monthly fee. This is neither necessary nor particularly productive. With the big three search engines accouning for the vast bulk of all English language searches around the globe it is these that you need to ensure are correctly and frequently indexing your site. With just a few quality backlinks from frequently indexed pages, your site too will be visited on a relatively regular basis. In a way paying a premium for regular submissions is like the 'Emperor's new clothes' in that it is a service you can often get for free or little money as part of a hosting account or at a site dedicated to the purpose.

How often should you submit?

If you choose to submit then you need only do it once at each of the major search engines. Repeated submission achieves nothing, as long as you are pursuing a productive backlink strategy, and doing it too frequently can be counterproductive.

How many individual pages should you submit?

You only need to submit your site's homepage URL. As all other sections of your site should be accessible from this starting point (with no orphaned pages) the search engines' bots should be able to discover the rest of your site's pages and content with ease.

Where do you submit?

Google

MSN Live Search

Yahoo!

Links above are for free manual submissions. Other categories of submission may be available, examples being premium or fast track, sponsored, mobile content and specific category submission which may require payment. You may also wish to submit to a number of other search engines depending upon your location and target market.
